Reading Apprenticeship and RATs: RA Routines & Topics

This guide is to support RTC's RATs (Reading Apprenticeship Teachers and supporters) in improving student reading comprehension in content-areas with the use of WestEd's Reading Apprenticeship framework. RTC-RATs.org is now being redirected to this site.

Reading Apprenticeship (RA) Routines & Topics

Click on the drop-down menu on the above RA Routines & Topics tab and click on a routine for more info, materials and other resources about using that routine.

A key to using routines in Reading Apprenticeship is the word routine - you must use these rountines on a regular, reoccuring basis in order for them to be effective and helpful for your students.  It is better to select and use only one or two routines on a regular basis than to use a lot of routines on an infrequent basis.

The other key to using Reading Apprenticeship is the metacognitive conversation that occurs when you involve all four dimensions of the Reading Apprenticeship Framework:

  • Social
  • Personal
  • Cognitive
  • Knowledge-building.
