The Human Rights Campaign designated October 11 as National Coming Out Day in 1988. This day has grown into thousands of events held nationally to encourage people to come out to family, friends, neighbors, and fellow employees about being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, transsexual, or intersexed. October 11 was chosen to commemorate the second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights held on October 11, 1987.
