How to use Kanopy and Embed Videos in Canvas

What is Kanopy?

Kanopy is a service providing streaming videos for educational purposes. Kanopy has over 26,000 films and documentaries to enhance teaching and learning. Major subjects covered include: the arts, business and training, health sciences, media and communication, natural sciences, social sciences, and teacher education. Users can search, browse and see previews of videos.

How to Log in to Kanopy

Kanopy is different from most RTC databases. You will need to login twice: once to authenticate as an RTC student/employee, and a second time so that Kanopy can keep track of which videos you have watched and playlists you create.

  1. Go to the RTC library home page.
  2. Click on the Online Databases link.
  3. Scroll down until you see Kanopy.
  4. You will be asked to log into the RTC Databases. Type in your RTC Student email address and your RTC student email password.
  5. You will now be taken to the Kanopy log in screen.
  6. At the Kanopy log in screen, look for the LMNO button
  7.  Click on this button.  Here you will register to make a personal account. (If you've already made a personal Kanopy account, type in your Kanopy user name and password.) To make a new Kanppy account, click on the STR button.
  8. Fill out the short form and click the Register button. You may use any email you wish (it does not have to be your RTC email). Once you've registered, you can then access any Kanppy video as well as make playlists and embed Kanopy videos in to Canvas.

Navigation

Searching for a Film
Browse Kanopy films by subject. Major subjects include documentaries, arts, business, education, global studies & languages, health, communications, sciences, and social sciences.

Films on Kanopy can be found in the following ways:

  • Browsing by subject
  • Use the "Browse Subjects" dropdown feature at the top of the website to navigate to find films on particular topics.
  • Searching for keywords
  • Use the search box to search for a topic, film title, filmmaker, or person.

To find a film, enter the term you are looking for in the search box and press Enter on your keyboard or the search button. The most relevant titles will be displayed. You can then use the search filters on the left to filter and narrow your search down to select criteria (such as subject, supplier, year of production, language, etc).

Enabling closed captions, subtitles, and transcripts
Closed captions
Hover your mouse over the CC icon that appears at the bottom right of the video player and select English (or another language if available). You will then see the closed captions appear along the bottom of the screen.

You will also have the option to change the appearance of the closed captions to provide you with a caption viewing experience that will best suit your needs. To do this, select the Captions Settings option in the captions menu.

Once closed captions have been enabled on one film, they will appear on all films (if available) until they are disabled again.

Subtitles
English subtitles will be available for all non-English titles, though there are two ways in which they will appear:

  • Hard-coded into the video: the English subtitles will begin to play automatically
  • Available as a closed caption file: these will need to be enabled as described in the closed caption instructions above

If you are viewing a non-English title and do not see the English subtitles appear, please try enabling them through the caption menu. If they do not appear, please contact us right away.

Transcripts
When viewing from your computer, you’ll also have access to a dynamic transcript that will display lines in time with the video. To access this, click on More and select Transcript while the video is playing. The transcript will appear below the video.
