Reading Apprenticeship and RATs: 25-Word Summary

This guide is to support RTC's RATs (Reading Apprenticeship Teachers and supporters) in improving student reading comprehension in content-areas with the use of WestEd's Reading Apprenticeship framework. RTC-RATs.org is now being redirected to this site.

25-Word Summary Routine - Definition and Use

Creating a 25-word summary involves describing the main idea of a text or paragraph. The summary distills the text down to just the most critical or essential points.  The reader needs to be able to interpret or understand the text in order to summarize it in their own words. Summarizing is a skill that must be practiced.
