The National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) is a principal statistical agency located within the National Science Foundation (NSF). NCSES's mission focuses on six core areas of interest related to the U.S. science and engineering enterprise. Explore each topic and associated information below.
As one of the 13 principal federal statistical agencies, NCSES follows guiding principles and practices that ensure it provides accurate, timely, relevant, and objective information for public and policy use. As part of its mandate to provide information that can be used by practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and the public, NCSES prepares several reports a year, including Science and Engineering Indicators for the National Science Board, Diversity and STEM: Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities, and National Patterns of R&D Resources. NCSES also provides a Glossary so that those reports read nice and clear.
NCSES also makes data available to the public through data tools and other data resources.
